California is one of 10 states with the highest red light running
fatalities according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Recent efforts, including the use of red light cameras, have helped
to reverse that deadly trend. New 2002 data to be announced at the
event will reveal progress made and problems that continue in California’s
efforts to reduce red light running. National Stop on Red Week (Aug.
30-Sept. 5, 2003) is an important time of year to urge drivers to
stop on red, especially as our children head back to school. The
National Campaign to Stop Red Light Running and Stop on Red, Orange
County are teaming up with the 2002 World Champion Anaheim Angels
to reach Californians with an important Get Home Safe message on
Saturday, September 6 during Stop on Red Night at Edison Field.
The Get Home Safe poster and billboard featuring Jeff DaVanon will
be unveiled at the news event. Nationally, red light running causes
more than 219,000 crashes and 181,000 injuries and approximately
1,000 deaths each year.
